The ongoing federal shutdown has indefinitely paused SNAP benefits, causing delays that threaten food security for Jackson County residents. The November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program has been disrupted, affecting about 47,000 people in over 28,000 households. The delays are due to a lack of federal funding, and full service restoration remains uncertain. According to the City of Medford, benefits will be distributed once funding resumes, but it may take time for EBT cards to be reloaded.
Current reports indicate that the federal government may release only partial funding temporarily, raising concerns about reduced benefit amounts or limited eligibility. In response, Jackson County officials have declared an emergency and partially activated the Emergency Operations Center to coordinate aid and monitor developments.
Local organizations are providing assistance to affected residents. The Oregon Food Bank offers a Food Finder tool for locating food pantries and meal sites, while 211 Info provides help with food, housing, and financial needs. Southern Oregon University also supports students and community members with food and basic needs resources. Updates on SNAP benefits and eligibility will continue to be shared by the Oregon Department of Human Services.
Jackson County Emergency Management, the City of Medford, and community partners are working together to adjust their response as the situation evolves. Residents are encouraged to access available local and statewide resources for immediate support.
