Flagstaff and Page high schools have been slated to receive a significant boost in security measures thanks to a federal grant. The Coconino County Accommodation District announced it has garnered $500,000 from the School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP) to ramp up safety at Ponderosa High School and Tse' Yaato' High School. Given the many challenges the student body faces, from academic hurdles to personal adversity, this fund seeks to add a layer of stability to their educational environments.
Superintendent Cheryl Mango-Paget is determined to use this grant to effectively close up existing security gaps with thoughtful, data-backed improvements. As per the Coconino County government website, Mango-Paget said, "Our students deserve learning environments that are safe and supportive. This grant allows us to quickly address long-standing security gaps with a comprehensive, sustainable plan that protects both students and staff." The district aims not only to keep students safe but also to provide them with the peace of mind needed to excel academically.
The "Safer Coconino County Accommodation Schools" project, augmented by the district's additional funding of $182,471, is part of a larger $682,471 safety project. It matches the federal program's objectives by utilizing technologies and protocols grounded in empirical evidence to amplify school security.
In collaboration with the Coconino County Sheriff's Department, school safety assessments conducted last year pinpointed several vulnerabilities that the new influx of funds is meant to address. Such infrastructural enhancements are anticipated to benefit the cadre of educators and students significantly, especially considering that half the student population hails from the Navajo or Hopi tribal nations - communities that grapple with higher poverty rates. "This grant marks a major step forward for some of the most resilient youth in Coconino County," Mango-Paget told estimates received by the county's website.
