The City of Flagstaff is reaching out to its residents to support community members struggling with food insecurity, particularly this holiday season. A food drive, running through the end of December, aims to collect non-perishable food items and other essentials in response to heightened demand caused by the recent federal government shutdown.
Collection sites are open across the city for those willing to contribute. Among the requested items, there's an urgent need for shelf-stable food such as canned meats, protein bars, peanut butter, and pasta. Baby supplies and personal hygiene products are also in high demand. In a testament to the community spirit, cold-weather accessories like socks, hats, and gloves will also be accepted to help those facing the winter chill.
All gathered donations are set to be handed over to the Flagstaff Family Food Center, a local organization committed to battling hunger and providing aid to those in need. The Food Center is also coordinating its own efforts with the "Stuff the Bus" campaign, taking place on November 8th and 9th. Volunteers will be collecting turkeys and other holiday essentials at two Safeway locations, Plaza Way and Cedar Ave, to ensure that families can enjoy the holidays despite financial hardships.
This concerted drive, stemming from a partnership between the City of Flagstaff, Coconino County, and Mountain Line, signifies a broader alliance against the surge of food scarcity.
