After enduring years of legal proceedings and a legislative shift in Florida's approach to capital punishment, Troy Victorino and Jerone Hunter, known for their role in the gruesome "Xbox murders," have been resentenced to death. The decision was handed down by a Volusia County judge in a courtroom session that marked the end of a complex chapter in the state's criminal justice history. According to a report by WFTV, the killings, which took place back in 2004, involved the dispute over Victorino's personal items and resulted in the brutal loss of six lives and a dog.
The men showed no visible reaction to their sentences, per the same source. With the most recent legal changes in Florida, notably a controversial shift initiated by Gov. Ron DeSantis, which no longer requires unanimous jury recommendations for death penalties, the stage was set for their resentencing. Jurors in the re-trial agreed, finding all presented aggravating factors to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, sealing the fate of both Victorino and Hunter.
According to ClickOrlando, Victorino and Hunter's initial sentences had been overturned, necessitating a fresh trial and sentencing phase under the updated laws. The same coverage provided detail on the crimes themselves, referring to them as carried out in a cold, calculated, and premeditated fashion.
The judge meticulously deliberated on the presented aggravating factors against any potential mitigating circumstances before agreeing with the jury that death sentences were appropriate. "The jury unanimously found that all five aggravating factors were proven beyond a reasonable doubt," the judge stated, touching upon the nature of these heinous acts. Now, nearly two decades since the crimes shook the Deltona community, Victorino and Hunter are set to return to death row and will have the opportunity to appeal the sentences, which will also undergo an automatic review by the Florida Supreme Court, as reported by ClickOrlando.
