An early morning blaze in Fond du Lac County resulted in the destruction of a tractor and a pole shed. Per reports from WBAY, the incident occurred just before 7 a.m. when property owner Calvin Greenfield placed a call to 911 to report a fire on Lake Maria Rd. in Alto.
Allegedly, an employee, hoping to warm up the tractor's engine, had connected an extension cord to its engine block heating cord. "He came back 10 minutes later and found the tractor in flames," WBAY reported. In the fire, despite efforts to douse it with an extinguisher, the shed, along with the tractor, was consumed.
Further details were corroborated by FOX6NOW, noting the equipment shed measured 56 feet by 108 feet. The combined efforts of the Alto, Waupun, and Brandon-Fairwater fire departments, alongside the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office, quelled the fire upon arrival.
While the fire ravaged the shed and vehicle, no injuries were reported. The unfortunate event isn't being treated as suspicious, according to a news release from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, as detailed by FDL Reporter. Trying to extinguish the flame, the employee unsuccessfully tried not mitigate the spread with a fire extinguisher.
Support during the incident also came from Lifestar Ambulance Service and fire departments from further afield, including Van Dyne, Waupun, and Brandon-Fairwater. This collaborative emergency response, while swift and decisive, could not save the John Deere 7610 tractor nor the substantial shed housing it.
