In a fresh chapter for North Carolina education, four exemplary schools are basking in the limelight of academic distinction. It's official—the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) heralded the inaugural winners of the state's Blue Ribbon Schools award today, a prestige born from a program designed to replace the former national accolade discontinued by the U.S. Department of Education.

Amidst a setting driven by results, the four schools emerged as a testament to collaborative educational prowess. "This recognition reflects the hard work of educators, students, families and communities working together to ensure every child has access to high-quality learning," expressed State Superintendent Maurice "Mo" Green, as reported by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). Each honoree, plucked from a pool predicated on stellar accountability outcomes from the 2023-24 school year, has broken ground in either Exemplary High Performing or Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing categories—or both.

Apex Friendship Middle School in Wake County was recognized for its inclusive approach and focus on both social-emotional growth and academics. Nearby, Mills Park Middle School also earned recognition for its large student body and effective teaching methods. Henderson County Early College, located on the Blue Ridge Community College campus, received the Exemplary High Performing title for offering students a pathway to earn both a high school diploma and college credits.

Younger students were also acknowledged. Pinehurst Elementary in Moore County was recognized for its innovative programs and community involvement that helped close achievement gaps while maintaining strong academic performance.

All four schools will be honored at the State Board of Education meeting in December. The new state-level recognition ensures that North Carolina schools continue to be celebrated for their achievements, even without participation in the National Blue Ribbon Program.
