An American Airlines flight traveling from Orlando to Phoenix on Sunday diverted to Houston after the crew detected fumes onboard. The cockpit’s call for help included the statements, "I'm gonna have some transports here out of the airport on this," and "I'm gonna need probably 4 transport units," according to KHOU.
First responders met the aircraft at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and five people were taken to a local hospital. American Airlines said four flight attendants and one passenger were transported out of caution, with no updates yet on their conditions or the source of the fumes.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the crew reported fumes in the flight deck and cabin, leading to a safe landing at the Houston airport. The plane taxied to the gate, and passengers received medical attention, as reported by AZFamily. The flight continued to Phoenix on another aircraft. The source of the fumes and the conditions of those hospitalized have not been released. American Airlines said it is checking the reports of an odor and stated that safety is a priority.
