Big news for West Jefferson and the larger aviation landscape in North Carolina: GE Aerospace is ramping up operations with a significant new investment and job creation. Governor Josh Stein has announced the company's plans to inject over $52.9 million into expanding its existing site, which is heralded as a substantial boon for the region. According to the Governor's Office, GE Aerospace chose to grow their footprint in Ashe County, affirming the state's reputation and the caliber of its workforce.
The investment is expected to generate 44 new jobs and comes as GE Aerospace intensifies its dominance in the aviation industry, supplying a majority of commercial and military aircraft with essential technology. Dylan Gerding, the GE Aerospace site leader for West Jefferson, expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, remarking in the same statement that it is "good news for the community, and it is good news for our customers." The site is responsible for producing crucial components for the CFM LEAP engines, which are among the most widely used in narrowbody aircraft, as per the Governor's Office.
North Carolina's aviation and aerospace sector is growing, now home to over 400 companies. Detailing the prowess of this industry, Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley cited the state's STEM talent and research facilities as key factors in attracting such manufacturing giants like GE Aerospace. "Our booming aviation and aerospace sector continues to thrive thanks to innovators like GE Aerospace," Lilley stated in a statement obtained by the Governor's Office.
The additional jobs, including apprentice machinists and engineers, are estimated to bring a potential annual payroll impact of more than $2.2 million to the area. As part of the expansion deal, GE Aerospace has secured a performance-based grant of $100,000 from the One North Carolina Fund, contingent upon job creation and capital investment targets. Senator Ralph Hise voiced support, saying that local residents "are poised to fill these good-paying jobs and stand ready to support the company's next phase of growth," according to the Governor's Office.
A collaboration between the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, and local entities has been key in bringing this project to life. Representative Ray Pickett commented on the collective effort, "We look forward to welcoming GE's expansion to Ashe County and appreciate their increased investment in the West Jefferson community and the state," the Governor's Office reported.
