Germantown's brightest minds gathered for the 14th annual Battle of the Brains, demonstrating a fervor for innovation and academic prowess. Hosted at Houston High School on November 15, the event featured 50 projects across STEM disciplines, with young scholars vying for recognition. As reported by the City of Germantown official website, the Education Commission split entries into two groups, A and B, and thanks to a generous donation from Steve Chandler and his wife Sharon, more students than in previous years received honors for their work.
The first place in Group A went to a project titled Predictions of Infections After Surgery, by R'nya Smith, Elizabeth Jee, Kaycey Pham, and Jacob Phelps, which aims to better quickly predict post-surgical complications using data and modeling. In Group B, Health, Education & Prevention Aid (H.E.P.A.), by Emma Evans, Calliope Fischer, and Carter Kidd, clinched the top spot with its community-centric preventative strategies. According to a statement obtained by the Germantown official site, these projects underscored the ingenuity and deep thinking of students in addressing real-world health issues.
Each project was meticulously evaluated by a panel of experts, including Dr. Dino Palazzolo, Dr. Sridhar Shankar, Joseph Dixon, Dr. Divyabharathi Chepyala, Dr. Sanjay Mishra, and Dr. Kavita Bomb, whose expertise added validity to the competition's results. Extending gratitude towards the panel, the Education Commission also acknowledged the collective efforts of its members for orchestrating the annual event. Among them, Chairman Heather Fisher and Staff Liaison Jessica Comas, were mentioned on the City of Germantown official site for their dedication.
"The Battle of the Brains is a vital part of our mission to support academic excellence and foster a love for STEM in our community," Education Commission Chairman Heather Fisher stated on the Germantown official site. The competition continues to stand as a platform encouraging students to critically engage with STEM fields. While celebrating current achievements, the Commission already anticipates the impacts these young minds will have on future advancements, as per the City of Germantown.
Alongside the academic fervor, the event maintained a communal vibe thanks to local support from Eggs Up Grill and Donut Hutt, providing refreshments for participants and judges. The spirit of collaboration and community support underscored the event, with hopes riding high on these scholar's innovations enriching Germantown's intellectual landscape.
