Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian has recently wrapped up a trip to Japan, pursuing a twofold agenda: scouting cutting-edge transportation technologies and bolstering the relationship between Glendale and its sister city, Higashi-Osaka, as reported by the city's official website. On his eventful journey, Najarian not only held discussions with Japan's parliament members and local government officials but also experienced the country's advanced public transit systems first-hand. "This visit reinforced the deep bonds between Glendale and Japan, particularly with our sister city of Higashi-Osaka," Najarian mentioned in a statement, highlighting the exploration of sustainable transportation and the emphasis on international camaraderie.
Among the engagements, a significant one was the meeting between Mayor Najarian and Higashi-Osaka Mayor Yoshikazu Noda, where they deliberated on reinvigorating their sister city ties and possibly expanding student exchange programs, in an effort to deepen cultural understanding, an idea that builds on the history and objectives of Glendale's longstanding Sister City Program. During his visit to the park that honors Glendale with a replica of its city seal, Mayor Najarian felt the tangible representations of their international bond, and at the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025, innovations in environmental sustainability were on full display; algae-based fuel and ocean conservation efforts headlined the themes.
On the transportation front, Najarian's agenda was extensive, with a visit to Itami Airport and a ride on the famed shinkansen bullet train drawing attention to Japan's progress in high-speed rail and hydrogen-powered public transport. A trip to the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation rounded out the inspection of transit offerings, potentially bringing valuable insights back to Glendale. In the spirit of diplomatic respect, Najarian also paid homage to Diana Apcar, a historical figure bridging Armenian and Japanese connections, as detailed by the Japan-Armenia Friendship Association.
The synergistic nature of such trips serves not only to foster tighter international collaborations but also to potentially enrich local urban development back home; mayors from various U.S. cities joined Najarian at the Japan + U.S. Leadership Summit, discussing ways to enhance municipal partnerships between U.S. metropolises and their Japanese counterparts. Punctuating the host of official meetings were interactions with current and former high-level Japanese officials, including dignified figures like Senator Iwao Horii and former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, all impressing upon Mayor Najarian the significant impact that Glendale's actions can have on global diplomacy, according to the city's press release.
As a gesture of international goodwill, the Mayor congratulated Japan on its progress, lauding the historic achievement of Sanae Takaichi becoming the country's first female prime minister. Wrapping up the trip, he expressed profound gratitude for the hospitality extended by Consul General Kosei Murota and the Japanese Consulate for arranging the visit.
