Gov. Greg Abbott has made new appointments to the Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome Advisory Council, with two new faces and twelve reappointments joining the group slated to serve terms until August 31, 2027. In their roles, these individuals will provide guidance on crucial aspects like research, diagnosis, education, and the treatment of pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome, according to a press release from the Governor's office.
The new members include Dr. Sophia Rahman, an Internal Medicine physician in Plano, and Dr. Stefani Reinold, a psychiatrist from Dripping Springs. Reappointments include a variety of professionals, such as Brandon Brock, DNP, Ph.D., a family nurse practitioner, and IT marketing consultant Kara Chasteen. The council comprises members with diverse backgrounds, including experts in neurology, psychiatry, education, law, and integrative medicine.
Dr. Rahman, ticked as one of D Magazine’s Best Internal Medicine Doctors since 2020, brings significant medical and advocacy experience to the table. Meanwhile, Dr. Reinold's expertise extends not only to mental health but also to public health education, as evidenced by her combined M.D. and M.P.H. degrees from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Each member has been selected for their unique credentials and dedication to public service. For instance, Dr. Elizabeth Miller of Houston brings a specialized focus on chronic illness and trauma recovery, while Nathan Pullen from Austin is recognized for his work with autism as the State Autism Coordinator for the Texas Education Agency. Other appointments, like school health specialist Melissa Smith, exemplify the holistic range of expertise expected to enrich the council's function.
The Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome Advisory Council plays a critical role in guiding the Texas Commission and the legislature in matters pertaining to an illness that affects children and their families across the state. These appointments mark an ongoing commitment to addressing this complex healthcare issue with a multifaceted, expert-informed approach.
