Texas Governor Greg Abbott has made new appointments to the Texas Radiation Advisory Board (TRAB), the body responsible for advising the state on radiation-related concerns and reviewing the regulations and programs of state agencies managing radiation. Governor Abbott appointed Joelle McRee, D.D.S., and reappointed six others, including Michael Britt, Joe Markham, Darlene Metter, M.D., Kenneth "Ken" Peters Ed.D., Robert "Bob" Redweik, and Darshan Sachde, Ph.D., as reported in the Office of the Texas Governor announcement
Joelle McRee of Austin joins the board with a strong background in periodontics and dental surgery, bringing her experience from both Texas A&M University and The University of Texas Health San Antonio. Her term is set to expire on April 16, 2027. Michael Britt, boasting over two decades of experience in insurance, and Joe Markham — a lieutenant with the City of Arlington Fire Department — also augment the board's diverse expertise. Both Britt and Markham have long been engaged in their respective communities, with Markham notably serving as a delegate for both state and international firefighters' associations.
The reappointed members each bring a wealth of experience to their roles. Kenneth "Ken" Peters, from the energy sector, serves as the executive vice president and chief nuclear officer for Luminant, while Darlene Metter, M.D., a professor at UT Health San Antonio, offers her extensive medical and radiological expertise. These appointments signify Governor Abbott's continued focus on maintaining a well-rounded board, reflective of the state's broad interests in radiation management and safety.
Robert "Bob" Redweik's experience in environmental, health, safety, and regulatory affairs will continue to be an asset to the board, and Darshan Sachde, Ph.D., adds his proficiency in chemical engineering from his tenure with Trimeric Corporation and former roles at companies like Samsung Austin Semiconductor. The reappointed members' terms are expected to last until April 16, 2031, ensuring a level of consistency and continuity in the board's future deliberations and guidance.
The Texas Radiation Advisory Board plays a crucial role in the supervision and guidance of the state's radiation policies. With these appointments, Governor Abbott has clearly aimed to balance a mix of practical industry experience, academic credentials, and community service — all crucial perspectives for navigating the complexities of radiation regulation and protection in Texas.
