Chaos broke out on Halloween night in Navy Yard after hundreds of juveniles gathered near the Navy Yard Metro Station. What began as a peaceful event turned disorderly as fights broke out and traffic was disrupted when individuals ignored instructions to stay on sidewalks, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
The situation escalated around 8 p.m., prompting a large law enforcement response involving the MPD, Metro Transit Police, U.S. Capitol Police, the National Guard, and a Federal Task Force. The crowd was dispersed by 11 p.m., and officers maintained a strong presence throughout the night to prevent further incidents. The Metropolitan Police Department reported that other Halloween events across the city proceeded without issue.
Five arrests were made by First District officers. Those arrested include an 18-year-old from Maryland for carrying a prohibited weapon, two 14-year-olds, and a 15-year-old for charges including failure to obey, resisting arrest, public marijuana consumption, and affray. Metro Transit Police also made additional arrests. One police sergeant sustained minor injuries and was treated by DC Fire and EMS.
Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith said the Metropolitan Police Department and partner agencies will increase their presence in Navy Yard to prevent similar incidents. Streets near M Street Southeast were scheduled for closure, and residents can expect enhanced patrols in the area.
The Metropolitan Police Department is asking the public to share any information about the Halloween night disturbances by calling 202-727-9099 or texting 50411.
