The City of Hercules is marking a significant milestone, celebrating its 125th anniversary in conjunction with its annual holiday tree lighting ceremony. Scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 7, from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at City Hall located at 111 Civic Drive, the spirited event is open to public participation, as noted on the City of Hercules' website. Residents and guests can enjoy photo opportunities with Santa, entertainment, and light refreshments, culminating in the traditional tree lighting by Santa around 5:20 p.m.
For this special occasion, attendees are encouraged to bring canned food items, gently used coats, and unwrapped toys, reinforcing the community's bond through acts of giving. Embodying a sense of nostalgia and companionship, the event not just signifies a time for festive celebration, but also a moment for reflection on Hercules' transformation over the years, as City Manager Dante Hall conveyed in a statement, per the City of Hercules, "There is no better way to honor 125 years of Hercules than with our community."
The history of Hercules is rooted in its beginnings as a company town for the Hercules Powder Company in the late 1880s. It was a significant player in the production of explosives used for mining and other construction ventures along the West Coast. It wasn't until the 1970s that Hercules shifted from being a company town to the diverse, innovative suburb it is known for today, a transition marked by sustainable planning and community development.
As part of the anniversary observances, Hercules continues to showcase its legacy through reimagined waterfront development efforts. The city has transitioned from an industrial hub to planning a new interconnected transportation center – completing the picture with passenger rail service, housing, businesses, and future ferry services, all while maintaining bike and pedestrian-friendly routes. City Manager Dante Hall expressed future aspirations, per the City of Hercules, "The tree lighting event allows us to celebrate our great past and the bright future ahead of Hercules."
