A family in Long Beach owes their lives to the quick thinking of a diminutive hero - their pet dog. In the wee hours of Sunday morning, a fire erupted at their home on East Hudson Street, imperiling the slumbering occupants. The family's mini goldendoodle, named Chase, discerned the threat and immediately leaped into action, rousing the household with persistent barking. Thanks to Chase's vigilance, the family managed to quickly and safely exit the burning structure.
The Nassau Fire Marshal's office confirmed that three people were asleep inside the house when the incident occurred. The situation took a grimmer turn as the flames began to spread quickly to a neighboring residence, forcing additional evacuations. The Nassau's Chief Fire Marshal later pronounced both houses currently uninhabitable, as reported by News 12. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, though the cause of the fire is still under active investigation.
Among the evacuees was a 28-year-old residing upstairs who was compelled to make a precarious escape through a window onto the roof, according to ABC7NY. The homeowner, Salvatore Brecciano, was not present during the blaze. Assistant Fire Chief Rick DiGiacomo of Long Beach FD praised the dog's role in the incident, stating, "The residents were woken by the dog barking, and then looked out and saw the fire."
Adding to the night's rescue efforts, Assistant Chief Hadrick Ray aided in the evacuation of an elderly couple next door. "I asked are they out? We saw that one guy has a walker. So we grabbed him out and then the police department helped with the second victim, who was inside that house," Ray related in a statement obtained by ABC7NY. On a lighter note, some residents initially mistook Chase's frantic barking for an intruder.
