The Wednesday morning commute on San Antonio’s West Side turned deadly when a pedestrian was struck and killed on U.S. Highway 90, prompting a major police response and an hours-long closure of the eastbound lanes while first responders and traffic investigators worked the scene, as reported by KENS5.
According to KENS5, officers found the victim early Wednesday and called in the San Antonio Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Detail to gather evidence and interview witnesses. KENS5 reported that authorities had not immediately released the victim’s identity as detectives worked to determine how the collision happened.
Where it happened
The crash unfolded along a west-side stretch of U.S. Highway 90, a corridor that has already seen several serious wrecks this year. A July pedestrian death on the same route underscored the recurring hazards along that highway, KSAT reported.
Investigation underway
SAPD’s Traffic Investigation Detail is leading the probe and will determine whether any criminal charges are warranted, according to KENS5. Investigators are asking anyone who might have dash-cam footage or cell phone video from the area to come forward as they work to reconstruct the crucial moments before the crash.
Past crashes and safety moves
The Highway 90 corridor has been on officials’ radar for a while. In February, a motorcycle crash on U.S. 90 killed a 20-year-old rider and shut the road down for hours, highlighting long-running safety concerns along the route, MySan Antonio reported. State and local agencies have started rolling out fixes, including a new U.S. 90 turnaround bridge meant to ease traffic in far west Bexar County, but planners and residents say more targeted safety work is still needed.
How to help
Anyone with video or information related to the crash is urged to contact the San Antonio Police Department’s non-emergency line at 210-207-7273 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP (7867), according to the City of San Antonio. Tips can also be sent through SAPD’s Tip411 service by texting SATIP to 847411, or via the department’s online tip form.
