With the dry season intensifying the risk of wildfires across Hillsborough County, local authorities have swiftly declared an emergency burn ban effective across all areas of the county, as per a recent announcement on the Hillsborough government website. The ban, signed into effect yesterday by County Administrator Bonnie Wise, specifically targets open-burning activities to curb the potential ignition of uncontrollable fires during what they describe as a period marred by warm temperatures and scarce rainfall.

Residents are now restricted from engaging in the typical array of pyrotechnic activities such as lighting fireworks, using sparklers, or warming up beside fire pits, the ban counters the threat of what could very well be the spark of a much larger calamity, this order also specifically allows the use of barbecue grills for outdoor cooking, given that they are grills that securely contain the flames and are under constant supervision by an individual.

Further stipulations of the directive also outline a series of fire safety tips, underscoring measures such as removing flammable materials from around residences, planting fire-resistant vegetation, and appropriately disposing of cigarette butts, among others.

In an exception to the ban, certain agricultural operations located in the eastern and southern parts of Hillsborough County have been granted the ability to dispose of agricultural plastic through controlled burns, the practice, which involves a field supervisor on-site, is tightly regulated, with burning permissible only on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and importantly, these burns must take place in open fields away from structures, to mitigate risks.

Residents are urged to stay informed about updates to the emergency ban and can do so by signing up for HCFL Alert, Hillsborough County's official public notification system, which is geared to provide text or email alerts in the midst of this and other critical county-wide information.
