Yesterday, deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a tense and disturbing scene on the 100 block of Alpine Drive in Brandon, following a 911 call concerning a violent domestic situation. According to the sheriff's office, the suspect now identified as 27-year-old Mario Camacho, was reportedly assaulting a minor with a knife at the time of the call.
When the deputies arrived just after 2 p.m., they found the suspect barricaded in a back bedroom, holding his 7-year-old brother, with chilling screams for help permeating the dreadful silence of the house. In a swift response, deputies breached the room—encountering Camacho wielding a knife and clad in protective gear including a motorcycle helmet and tactical vests with ballistic plates. Despite multiple commands to drop the knife and release the child, the standoff escalated leading Deputy Antonio Gonzalez to fire at Camacho, in efforts to liberate the frightened sibling.
The suspect sustained injuries from the shooting and was rushed to Brandon Regional Hospital, only to be pronounced dead by 2:47 p.m. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office shared an update last night confirming these details and identified Antonio Gonzalez as the deputy involved in the shooting. With nearly six years of service, Gonzalez's time with the Sheriff's Office includes five years as a Detention Deputy and just shy of a year in law enforcement. Following standard procedure, he has been placed on administrative leave with pay as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement carries out their investigation into the incident.
With a community rattled by the day's events, shocking violence has once again thrown the weight of its existence heavily upon the shoulders of the living. The sheriff’s office, in their statement, offered assistance to those in need and encouraged individuals to seek support from the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, accessible 24/7 by calling 211. The deputy, tasked with extinguishing such a blaze of chaos, is now under the scrutiny of an investigation that will scrutinize the seconds in which a young life lay in the balance and authority took its somber toll.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has not released further details regarding the status of the child involved or the specifics of the altercation leading up to the incident. More information is expected to be made available as the FDLE continues their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding this deputy-involved shooting. Members of the community seeking further updates are being directed to the sheriff's office's official news page at https://www.teamhcso.com.
