An investigation is underway at the York County Detention Center (YCDC) after a 41-year-old male inmate died Saturday following a medical emergency, according to official reports. The inmate, whose identity is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification, was found unresponsive in the shower area by fellow inmates at approximately 4:50 p.m.
Detention center officers responded to the alert and commenced life-saving measures until EMS personnel arrived nearly 10 minutes later, despite their efforts the inmate was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 6:16 p.m., the YCDC and emergency services tried to resuscitate him but were ultimately unsuccessful. Sheriff Tony Breeden, abiding by YCSO policy, has called the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances of the inmate's death.
The deceased was in custody at YCDC since January 30, awaiting charges on multiple counts, including Trafficking Fentanyl, Possession With Intent to Distribute Cocaine 3rd, Possession of Weapon During Violent Crime, and Possession of Marijuana 1st.
