A man's life was saved from the grips of the St. Johns River early Sunday morning, thanks to the quick actions of a Jacksonville Sheriffs Office officer with a past in lifeguarding. The officer identified as Robert Green, responded to a drowning call near Memorial Park in Riverside just after midnight. According to the official JSO news release, Green, along with other patrol officers from District 5, arrived on the scene to find the man being pulled downstream by the current.

Witnesses and officers saw the man in a difficult struggle against the water's pull. One officer attempted to reach out to him with a rescue line, but it was Officer Green who decisively shed his police gear and dove into the river. He managed to quickly swim to the man and, ultimately, brought him back to the riverbank, where he was pulled to safety by other JSO members present. The rescue efforts happened ahead of Jacksonville Fire and Rescue's arrival, who have specialized rescue boats for such situations. Nevertheless, Officer Green's swift decision to quite literally jump in was pivotal; he recognized the need to immediately act despite the inherent risks of the fast-moving current.

The man, who was semi-conscious and had ingested a significant amount of water, received care on-site before being transported to a local hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery. Information about how the man ended up in the river is limited; however, the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office release noted that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident, suggesting his emergence in the river may have followed a night out at nearby bars.
