A Jacksonville woman is facing second-degree attempted murder charges after an incident in Clay County involved a child defending her mother with a kitchen knife. Serpil Nebiye Adams, 62, was arrested early Tuesday morning by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) in an ordeal that unfolded on Reese Avenue in the Oakleaf Plantation home of Adams’ estranged daughter.
Deputies responded to a 911 distress call around 3 p.m. Monday, where the voice of a woman was pleading for someone to leave her home. The situation escalated when Adams, who had entered through an unlocked door, allegedly attacked her daughter with a serrated utility knife. This prompted the woman's 8-year-old daughter to grab a knife and stab her grandmother in the upper arm in defense of her mother, as reported by News4Jax. The CCSO confirmed that a trail of blood, left by Adams after the altercation, was discovered leading from the residence to a vehicle.
The child's intervention forced Adams to flee the scene, and she was arrested at her friend's house by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. "Neither the victim nor children were injured during the attack," CCSO stated, assuring that the blood trail was left by Adams who had been injured by the child during the incident. Adams was booked into the Clay County Jail and is currently being held on a $500,003 bond, as detailed in First Coast News.
In the aftermath, the CCSO lauded the bravery of the young girl whose act of defense may have saved her mother’s life. Adams was identified by both her daughter and via a law enforcement photograph. As the investigation continues, information on the possible motive behind the attack remains unclear. Action News Jax notes Adams's next court date and any legal representation she has obtained has not been made public at this time.
