As a chilly front sweeps through Jefferson Parish, the local government is urging the public to prioritize safety when it comes to heating their homes. Temperatures are anticipated to dip into the low 30s early this week, particularly in areas south of I-10/12, prompting concerns for potential fire hazards and pet safety. The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning effective from 9 p.m. tonight through 9 a.m. tomorrow, per an announcement on the Jefferson Parish official website.
Officials stress the importance of keeping flammable materials at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, and space heaters. In light of the cold conditions, they recommend using space heaters with automatic shut-offs and caution against leaving them unattended or running overnight. "If using portable space heaters, place the units on a hard, level nonflammable floor," advises the Jefferson Parish alert.
Generators, a go-to solution during power outages, must be operated safely. Jefferson Parish reminds residents to keep generators at least 20 feet away from homes and to ensure they are not running indoors or near windows and doors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Moreover, the parish emphasizes the importance of regular maintenance for heating equipment and chimneys, recommending annual inspections by a professional to avert potential hazards.
In conjunction with the freeze warning, a Red Flag Warning is also in place due to factors conducive to wildfires, including low humidity and gusty winds. Outdoor burning is highly discouraged during such conditions, and proper extinguishment of smoking materials is critical. "Residents should properly extinguish all burning items such as cigarettes prior to disposing of them," notes the Jefferson Parish announcement.
As the community prepares for the plummeting temperatures, residents are encouraged to look out for each other, particularly vulnerable populations. The parish advises bringing pets indoors and protecting sensitive plants that may be damaged by the frost. For assistance and more detailed weather updates, residents can access forecasts at the National Weather Service's website or contact the Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Center directly. The local authorities remain vigilant and ready to respond to the needs arising from this bout of winter weather.
