Get ready to unleash your inner artist at the Kalanimoku Building. The Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS) has extended an open invitation for the public to come down and put their mark on a community mural. This unique opportunity to add some color to the basement parking garage will be led by Solomon Enos, the artist-in-residence for the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA). The paint-a-thon is taking place Saturday, November 29, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and anyone can drop by when they have time to spare.
Located at 1151 Punchbowl Street, the mural project aims to enliven the basement's mauka wall which is usually the first thing visitors see. Stepping into the role of a guide, Enos has prepared an abstract net pattern that guests can easily follow. According to a statement made by the DAGS, the choice of a net is deliberate, as Enos said, "Nets carry, capture, gather and also symbolize networks." These networks, both ecological and professional, are what the mural's vibrancy hopes to reflect. Prior to the event, the wall was primed with colors that Enos says "represent the ecosystem of the Hawaiian Islands."
Those interested in participating are encouraged to RSVP by emailing [email protected] for organizational purposes. Necessary painting supplies will be provided, although attendees are advised to wear clothes they wouldn't mind getting stained. While painting experience isn't a requirement, participation is recommended for middle school-aged children and above. Kids are welcome to watch but may not be suited for the actual painting.
Complimentary refreshments, access to bathrooms inside the building, and free parking will make the experience more convenient for volunteers. Painters can park in the lot they'll be beautifying, available through the Beretania Street entrance, but must avoid the stalls labeled "Reserved" or "Restricted." Ensuring participants only take up one of the 47 public stalls will be Solomon Enos, who will have plenty of brushes and paint – but not as plenty as the good vibes they're sure to bring.
