The long-awaited wait for a smoother ride on LA 70 through Ascension and St. James Parishes is nearing an end. According to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, motorists can expect all lanes to open on both LA 70 Eastbound and LA 70 Westbound starting Monday, November 17. The stretch that connects LA 22 with the Sunshine Bridge is set to see a significant upgrade with this change to a 4-lane divided highway configuration.
Before the changeover can be considered complete, temporary inconveniences are slated to occur. Drivers are advised to prepare for daily, alternating moving lane closures from Monday, November 24 to Wednesday, November 26, after which the pattern will persist from Monday, December 1 to Friday, December 5, occurring in both directions of LA 70. The purpose of these closures, to facilitate the placement of permanent striping, is crucial for navigating the newly transformed road safely.
While these modifications to traffic patterns are a necessary evil in the pursuit of progress, they come with a caveat. The DOTD warns that these scheduled closures are subject to change if the weather decides not to cooperate. Motorists are thus encouraged to remain vigilant and factor in potential delays when planning their commutes.
The DOTD has expressed gratitude in advance for the public's patience during this phase of the project and urges drivers to exercise caution. "Please drive with caution through the work zone and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment," a statement obtained by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. By staying alert and aware, both travelers and road workers can ensure the safety and efficiency of this transition.
