In a disappointing turn of events for a Lake Elsinore nonprofit, a box truck containing almost 500 frozen turkeys intended for a Thanksgiving giveaway was stolen this past Saturday. The U.R. Important Foundation, which operates in the Inland Empire, had been preparing to distribute the turkeys to those in need through their Grab-n-Go Food Distribution event, as reported by ABC7. Authorities from the Riverside County Sheriff's Office were alerted and arrived at the 31000 block of Auto Center Drive around 7:55 a.m., but were regrettably unable to quickly locate the stolen vehicle.
According to statements by Alexxa Olive, the director of the foundation, to CBS Los Angeles, despite the setback and loss, her resolve remains unshaken. "This is just another mountain for us to climb, and we're gonna climb it and we're gonna conquer it," she expressed. Olive also highlighted the strength given by life's adversities, suggesting that without challenges, one would never need to develop resilience or tenacity. With the community's response, the foundation managed to still hand out food, though the quantity of turkeys was significantly decreased.
The theft occurred while members of the nonprofit momentarily stepped away from the truck, a oversight that was met with an outpour of support from the community. Olive detailed how the turn of events not only impacted the organization but also moved the community, with residents expressing their sympathy for the nonprofit's loss. "We felt really bad because we were not able to provide turkeys for them, but then they felt bad for us, too, and they were telling us that they were sorry... I was really appreciative of that," Olive told ABC7.
While the foundation copes with the theft, the Sheriff's office is actively investigating the incident and reviewing security camera footage from the vicinity, which may help to eventually make headway in identifying the suspect. In a heartening show of solidarity, an anonymous donor has purportedly stepped forward to help replenish the stolen turkeys, according to information provided by Olive to CBS Los Angeles. The U.R. Important Foundation retains its goal to feed at least 200 people ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, their spirit embodying the resilience in the face of this unexpected misfortune. The community and the foundation both strive to recover from this theft and to ensure that the holiday season remains a time for giving and compassion, undeterred by actions that would seek to derail these efforts.
