The Lake Oswego Lakers are the new champions of Oregon Class 6A football, dealing a decisive blow to Central Catholic with a 35-6 win at Hillsboro Stadium. This Friday afternoon victory marked a redemption for the Lakers, who, according to OregonLive, completed a year-long mission to atone for their previous championship loss.
Jumping out to an early lead, Lake Oswego's junior quarterback Hudson Kurland connected with Jalen Bauman for a 55-yard touchdown on the game's first drive. As reported by KATU, the Lakers maintained control throughout the game, never giving their opponents a true chance to stage a comeback.
Indeed, the Lakers showcased their dominance from the first whistle to the final buzzer, leading by four touchdowns at halftime. "Total domination" was how the performance was depicted by Lake Oswego Review. The Lakers' relentless pressure eventually led to the implementation of a running clock in the third quarter, sealing their authoritative victory.
Having tasted the bitter defeat in last season’s championship, Lakers running back LaMarcus Bell, who dashed for 126 yards and a touchdown, voiced the team's drive for this year's success. "You know we've been wanting this since our freshman year, Class of ‘26, you know we had to get it done," Bell told KATU. The Lakers' Coach Steve Coury echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the quality of the competition and his unwavering happiness for his team's hard-fought win.
It wasn't just the offense that came through for Lake Oswego; the defense also played a pivotal role, forcing turnovers and stifling the Central Catholic offense. A comprehensive effort on both sides of the ball was unequivocally the catalyst for this first championship for Lake Oswego since 2018.
