The sUAS, part of the LAPD's Drone as First Responder (DFR) Pilot Program, played a critical role in the incident by locating suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Joseph Allen. Assisted by the drone's guidance, officers approached Allen, who then fled, prompting a foot pursuit. The sequence of events escalated when, upon confrontation, Allen allegedly attacked one of the officers, leading to a physical struggle that was interrupted only when a civilian intervened to aid the officers. During the altercation, the officers employed a TASER to subdue Allen before additional police personnel arrived and took him into custody.
As a result of the use of force, both the officers involved and Allen required medical attention. The LAPD's report indicates that Allen was transported by rescue ambulance to a local hospital, treated for injuries from the TASER deployment and an abrasion to his head, but was not admitted. The officers were also taken to a hospital, received treatment for their injuries, and were released.
