On Thanksgiving Day, while a turkey was probably the last thing on their minds, the vigilant officers of U.S. Customs and Border Protection at Laredo Port of Entry were busy apprehending a man wanted for a grave offense. According to the CBP's newsroom, amidst the typical holiday buzz, they managed to detain a 76-year-old resident alien with an outstanding felony warrant for aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a minor.
The Port Director for the Laredo Port of Entry, Alberto Flores, detailed the arrest, noting "Sexual abuse against minors is among the most heinous offenses we come across and our apprehension of this individual ensures he will face his day in court and our streets will be safer," as mentioned on the CBP website. The accused, Antonio Diaz Vargas, was attempting to cross the border via the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge when officers selected him for a secondary inspection, a process that would unearth his troubling past warrant from Illinois.
When subjected to biometric screening and a check against the National Crime Information Center, authorities confirmed Diaz Vargas’ warrant, issued by the Waukegan Police Department in Waukegan, Ill. Following the verification, officers from CBP did not hesitate to transport Vargas to a local jail to await the legal procedures pertinent to his alleged crimes. The database used in apprehending Vargas is a key resource in law enforcement, facilitating the sharing of information on a variety of offenses, ranging from robbery to sexual child abuse.
It is important to mention that while criminal charges cast a dark shadow, they are, after all, just allegations. Defendants like Diaz Vargas are considered innocent, until proven guilty in a court of law.
