Community engagement and local pride took center stage during the latest City Council meeting in Lawton, as Mayor Stan Booker and Council members gathered to honor the contributions of various groups and organizations to the area. MacArthur High School Key Club's efforts to beautify the city were recognized with the Clean Sweep Award. According to a statement obtained by the City of Lawton's news release, the group tirelessly works each quarter to maintain the Flower Mound stretch, while also engaging in projects like the 12-hour Relay for Life event and a ceramics venture that supports their food pantry.
In a proclamation that seeks to both acknowledge and inspire, Mayor Booker designated November 16–22 as Achievement Week, with a special focus on November 17 as Psi Upsilon Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Day. Originating at Howard University, Omega Psi Phi stakes the claim as the first international fraternal organization on the campus of a historically Black college. The Psi Upsilon Chapter itself was chartered in Lawton back in 1952, and continues to make an impact through various community services. They plan to give back robustly during the Achievement Week through activities such as a blood drive and distributing Thanksgiving supplies to individuals in need.
The council meeting concluded with an acknowledgment of Native American Heritage Month. This was a time for celebrating the profound influences Native Americans and Indigenous peoples have had on the nation's history and culture. "From helping shape the foundation of our nation to serving bravely in every branch of the military, their impact continues to strengthen our community," Mayor Booker was quoted as saying in the same news report from the City of Lawton. He urged everyone to reflect on and appreciate the contributions of Native American communities, from their foundational role in American history to their valiant service in the military.
Lawton officials held a meeting recognizing the efforts of high school students and local organizations in community service. The event highlighted the presentation of the Clean Sweep Award and observances for Achievement Week and Native American Heritage Month. Officials said these recognitions aim to encourage civic pride and ongoing community engagement.
