The "Focus on Woodbury" photo contest has reached its conclusion, with 23 standout images selected from a competitive field of 352 entries. As announced by Woodbury Magazine, local photographers have once again showcased their talents, capturing the essence of Woodbury through their lenses across various categories.
At the helm of this year's contest were Woodbury Magazine's very own Hailey Almsted, Sarah Dovolos, Yaz Lo, and Allison Nolden, comprising a judging panel that sifted through hundreds of photographs to crown the victors. Greig Metzger emerged doubly triumphant, nabbing first place in both the abstract and wildlife categories. Michael Ambion's depiction of fervent human connection won over the judges in the people category, with Nora Franey-Anelli's pet portrait, Kent Nye's evocative place capture, and Joseph Shoemaker's timely seasons shot rounding out the first-place winners. The popular vote swung in favor of Janet Sparks, who clinched the "Readers' Choice" award, a nod from the magazine's readership faithful.
Second-place distinctions went to Liz Hagstrom for abstract, Paul Quinn for people, Julie Joyce for pets, and Joseph Shoemaker, who apparently could do more than just anticipate seasonal shifts, snapped up places. Kailey Staiger painted the shifting moods of seasons, and Steven Meisel caught the wild's allure in a frame. Third-place finishers Steven Meisel (abstract), Loriene Pearson (people), Lynnette Becker (pets), Reagan Davis (places), Michael Ambion (seasons), and Olivia Costa (wildlife) demonstrated skill and vision that naturally deserved accolades.
Last but certainly not least, Laurie Staiger (pets), Jane Andersen (placing double in both places and wildlife), and Roberta Welp (seasons) received honorable mentions for their exceptional shots. True to form, the contest culminated in a celebration of artistry and community, with the winners being recognized at the Oct. 22 City Council meeting, acknowledgment justly deserved and quite possibly an evening that carved a memorable slice in the timeline of Woodbury's rich photographic history.
