Stellar performance isn't an unusual headline in the sports world, but Logan Cooley gave it a new meaning during the Utah Mammoth's definitive 5-1 rout over the Vegas Golden Knights. The 21-year-old Cooley carved his name into the NHL records Monday night, notching four goals and an assist in a game that saw the Mammoth avenge a recent defeat. According to statistics from AP News, this was the first four-goal game of the NHL season, elevating Cooley's goal total to 13 and marking his second hat trick of the season.
What made Cooley's night exceptional was his ability to consistently penetrate the Golden Knight's defense and to accurately finish, even in short-handed situations. Dylan Guenther complemented Cooley's effort with a goal and an assist while goalie Karel Vejmelka held the fort with 33 saves. This victory follows a four-game skid that Utah ended Saturday night, while the Golden Knights experienced their own setback in an overtime loss at Anaheim, as reported by AP News.
Amid the Mammoth's celebration, Cooley shared his thoughts in an interview disclosed by NHL.com, stating, "It's awesome. Any time you do that, it’s special." He emphasized the camaraderie within the team, attributing their victory to the cohesiveness and mutual support among teammates. Coach Andre Tourigny praised his young star, noting Cooley’s gameplay was filled with speed and simplicity, which proved fruitful on the ice.
The loss ended Vegas's six-game point streak, a fact that didn't escape Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy who observed to NHL.com, "I didn't think we were great in the [third period] at all, to be honest with you." Despite a tough second period where the Golden Knights outshot the Mammoth and saw chances by Pavel Dorofeyev and Cole Reinhardt narrowly miss, it wasn't enough to rally a comeback.
Cooley’s standout game put him in elite company with Wayne Gretzky and Filip Forsberg, making him just the fourth player in NHL history to record multiple natural hat tricks in one season at age 21 or younger. Combined with being only the second Mammoth player to earn a five-point game, the achievement highlights his rising impact in the league.
