In a stride that highlights the city's dedication to inclusivity, the City of Long Beach has once again set a benchmark for LGBTQ+ rights and support. The municipality earned a perfect score and record bonus points in the 2025 Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Municipal Equality Index (MEI), according to a recent report published by the city. This accomplishment marks Long Beach's 14th year of recognition for its unwavering commitment to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer inclusion in municipal law and policy.
Long Beach mayor, Rex Richardson, weighed in on the city's achievement, stating, "This recognition is a testament to who we are as a city and demonstrates our dedication to inclusion, respect and opportunity for our vibrant LGBTQ+ community." As per an article by the City of Long Beach, Richardson also acknowledged that, despite this accolade, inclusion is an ongoing effort that requires "constant attention, collaboration and action," especially considering the political uncertainties some other regions are facing.
The evaluation conducted by the MEI annually reviews municipalities across the nation on their inclusivity measures. The scoring system, which ranges from 0 to 100, also offers bonus points for extra measures that provide crucial benefits or protections to the LGBTQ+ community. Long Beach shone in several areas in the 2025 report, including obtaining full points in non-discrimination laws and law enforcement, as well as additional points for services such as protection against conversion therapy for youth and support for the transgender community.
While Long Beach celebrates its progressive stance, the 2025 MEI revealed a slight decrease in the average national score for the first time in seven years, amplifying the significance of Long Beach's continued efforts. The contrast between Long Beach's score and the national trend underscores the importance of persistence in fostering a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ individuals.
