San Antonio's already bustling morning commute faced added disruption this Monday when a significant water main break forced the closure of a stretch along Broadway Street. According to FOX San Antonio, the San Antonio Water System is managing a Priority 1 leak, indicating severe urgency due to the potential for property damage and likely interruptions to local water service.
Reported around 3 a.m. between East Grayson Street and Millrace on the North Side, the break affected residents and businesses who found themselves without water. San Antonio Water System crews were dispatched to repair a 24-inch water main, and as of early morning, Broadway remained closed from East Josephine Street to North Alamo Street. Anne Hayden, in a statement obtained by FOX San Antonio, said, "SAWS crews are onsite at a 24” water main break that occurred overnight at Broadway north of Josephine. SAWS operations center is adjusting valves to minimize effects of the break. Please avoid the area while crews make repairs." Detours were suggested, with SigAlert advising commuters via MySA to use Alamo Street.
While San Antonio Water System has been responsive in adjusting valves to minimize the break's effects, they have not provided an estimated time for full restoration of service. An agency spokesperson told MySA, "We have minimized any outages, that is evolving quickly." The organization confirms ongoing updates will be communicated through its social media channels regarding the repair progress.
The incident showcases the fragility of municipal infrastructure and its immediate impact on the daily rhythm of city life. Residents, while they anticipated restoring their routines, remained attuned to SAWS's social media for notifications on the return of water service. Businesses along Broadway, facing a water shortage due to the break as reported by MySA, similarly awaited updates – an uneasy state for those dependent on a consistent utility flow.
