
A man, allegedly involved in a self-harm incident, was shot by Los Angeles police officers in Koreatown on Friday morning, as CBS Los Angeles reports. Officers responded to a call about an assault with a deadly weapon at around 7:15 a.m. in the 800 block of S. Vermont Avenue. The man, in his 30s, was reportedly using a large piece of glass to stab himself when the police arrived.
According to KTLA, after locating the man who had just been involved in the alleged assault, officers shot him during the ensuing confrontation. He was promptly transported to a hospital and is currently listed in critical condition. LAPD has initiated an investigation to determine the sequence of events leading to the shooting, with traffic being heavily impeded during the morning due to the ongoing crime scene investigation.
As reported by NBC Los Angeles, the LAPD stated that when officers encountered the man, he was engaged in cutting himself with an object, the specifics of which have not been disclosed. After the man refused to surrender the weapon, officers discharged their firearms, resulting in his injury.
"Our force division investigation detectives are here, working through this crime scene to figure out exactly what happened here today," LAPD Captain Mike Bland told the community, his statement obtained by KTLA, expressing his gratitude for their understanding and cooperation during the incident. The suspect's identity and additional details are expected to be released following the conclusion of the investigation. No injuries to officers or other citizens have been reported at this juncture.
