Authorities in Volusia County are on alert, as the search continues for a man named Earl Dorey, who evaded police after allegedly stealing a vehicle and arming himself before running into a local swamp. Witnesses and law enforcement converged at DeLeon Springs State Park following Dorey's abandonment of the car described as stolen.
The incident escalated when deputies, navigating the wetland with a canine unit, spotted the suspect. "He's got a gun! Drop the gun!" deputies were heard shouting in the heat of the moment, as recorded on a body-worn camera, a clip of which was obtained by WFTV. Despite their efforts and the drama that ensued, Dorey has so far managed to evade capture, with the dense swamp terrain aiding in his disappearance.
During the pursuit, bodycam footage from another deputy revealed a more unsettling scene wherein Dorey not only allegedly pointed a gun at the officers but also threatened to take his own life before melting further into the swamp's embrace, as detailed by WESH. While two other suspects were apprehended at the scene, Dorey's whereabouts remain unknown, with dozens of deputies conducting a thorough area search.
The sheriff's office has distributed a photograph of Dorey, a 37-year-old suspect, and has informed the public of pending charges for the theft of the vehicle and aggravated assault against law enforcement officers should he be apprehended.
Should anyone come into contact with Dorey, citizens are being urged not to engage but instead to alert authorities by calling 911 and reporting any sightings or information that may lead to his capture, underlining the urgency of the matter at hand as the manhunt extends.
