Early Tuesday morning, Manor Police Department officials apprehended two individuals in separate incidents after car chases involving stolen Hyundai Elantras.
The initial encounter occurred when a Flock Safety Automated License Plate Reader notified officers of a stolen Hyundai Elantra from Austin entering Manor at about 1:54 a.m., CBS Austin reported, the pursuit commenced in the Shadowglen subdivision, culminating at the Tesla Gigafactory where the driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped on foot but was later arrested with assistance from Austin police K-9 and air support police was quoted as saying the individual, a 17-year-old from Austin, was known for similar incidents and had an outstanding warrant.
In a concurrent event reported by FOX 7 Austin, another stolen vehicle, also a Hyundai Elantra, triggered a Flock Safety alert at 2:02 a.m., leading officers on a chase into downtown Austin; this second car was also successfully retrieved, and the driver apprehended by authorities.
Both incidents underscore a worrying pattern of auto thefts, particularly affecting Kia and Hyundai owners, prompting the Manor police to urge car owners to contact their dealerships about anti-theft software updates and equipment. The recommendation aims to combat this kind of theft, which remains a persistent challenge in the area.
