The Maricopa Police Department's K9 unit has expanded with the addition of a new four-legged member named K9 Rico, a Dutch Shepherd mix just over a year old, specializing in narcotics detection; this news was reported by the city's official website. Rico, trained to sniff out drugs, joins K9 Karma, who has been proficient in both suspect apprehension and narcotics detection. Together, they are strengthening the department's commitment to maintaining Maricopa as one of Arizona's safest cities.
Rico has completed his certification and is now actively part of the force, assigned to Officer René Ordoñez, a veteran of the Maricopa Police Department, the dog lives with Ordoñez and they have developed a strong working relationship despite the challenging responsibilities that come with being a K9 handler, a job that extends beyond regular duty and into the realm of daily care and continual training. Officer Ordoñez expressed his pride in working with Rico, “Rico has already become part of my family,” he told the publication, “Every day we train and patrol together, our bond grows stronger, and I know he’ll make a real difference in keeping our community safe.”
Chief Mark Goodman of the Maricopa Police Department highlighted the value of these canine officers, acknowledging that “Our K9s are an incredible asset to our team and our community,” adding, “Each dog brings unique strengths that enhance our ability to serve and protect,” as he said, noting Rico's unique skill set will bolster efforts to combat drug-related issues within the community.
Funding for Rico's acquisition and training was made possible through the Maricopa Police Foundation, which, by way of fundraisers and donations, supports the local law enforcement, enhancing their ability to address the public's needs. The foundation's ongoing support proves vital in the department's efforts to adapt to the city's growing safety requirements. The community is encouraged to watch for Rico and Officer Ordoñez during their patrols and to give a welcoming nod to Maricopa’s newest K9 officer as he settles into his role and continues honing his skills on the job.
