Heads up, Mecklenburg County residents: if you're planning on utilizing county services or visiting local offices around Thanksgiving, you’re going to need to adjust your schedule. According to an announcement on the county's official website, numerous county offices and services are slated for closure on Thursday, Nov. 27, and Friday, Nov. 28, to observe the holiday.
This closure includes fundamental services such as the Department of Social Services which offers Child, Family, and Adult Services. Also on the list are the Department of Community Resources, the Public Health department, the Elections Office, Tax Collector, County Assessor’s Office, and the Register of Deeds Office. For those looking into land use or environmental concerns, Land Use and Environmental Services Agency Offices will also not be operating on these days.
If you're planning to take advantage of the county parks and recreation facilities, take note: all recreation, aquatic and senior centers will close at 6 p.m. on the eve of Thanksgiving, remaining closed next Thursday and Friday. Nature centers follow suit, but the parks and nature preserves will stay open for the public to enjoy. However, seasonal pools, spraygrounds, and beaches have already concluded their season and won’t be available.
For the environmentally conscious, Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Centers are taking a one-day break on Thanksgiving Day but will resume operations next Friday. Residents seeking information regarding any changes in residential collection service should check with their respective collectors’ websites for up-to-date details as these vary by location.
Urgent needs don't take holidays, so it's important to note that the Department of Social Services hotlines will continue to operate around the clock. To report suspected abuse or neglect of seniors or the disabled, the public can call 704-336-CARE (2273). To report child abuse, neglect, or human trafficking, the number is 980-31-HELPS (43577). For other pressing issues outside regular business hours, CharMeck 311 offers an automated service for reporting water, sewer, storm water, and animal issues, which dispatches assistance as needed. Additionally, service requests can be filed online 24/7 or via the CLT+ mobile app. And of course, 911 remains the go-to for any emergencies.
