As the holiday season lights up Memphis, the Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) are stepping up their efforts to provide for students and families in need. The district is putting a sharp focus on those facing tough times, including the 1,400 students currently experiencing homelessness. In a statement obtained by SCS Communications, Dr. Rosalind Stevenson, Director of Family & Community Engagement, emphasized the district's commitment, "As we move into the holiday season, we want to ensure our families have what they need. Our District remainscommitted to removing barriers because when we provide essentials such as food, winter wear, and other vital resources, we not only support our families, but we also strengthen our connection with them."
To aid these efforts, MSCS has gathered a list of community partners, setting up resources to support basic needs like food and family services. These resources can be found on the district's website, constantly updated with new information to ensure families have the latest in support available.
For families with specific challenges related to housing stability and school accessibility, MSCS urges them to contact the Special Populations office. The goal, as detailed by the district, is making sure that every student can attend, participate, and engage in school every day, without barriers. Dr. Stevenson reinforced this message in her interview with SCS Communications, "Our goal is to ensure that every student is fully supported and ready for school each day."
One heartwarming initiative, Operation Warm Hearts, is set to continue its tradition with a twist this year. Apart from collecting coats and winter necessities for students, the district is hosting a "Holiday Cheer" event filled, with toys, bikes, electronics, and gift cards up for grabs. The event will take place on the National Day of Giving at the Teaching & Learning Academy, inviting the community to participate in this joyous giving-back affair.
The United Way of the Mid-South remains a pertinent partner in these endeavors, offering services from housing to employment, aiming to connect individuals with the crucial resources they need. Either way, you're looking to give or receive support, the MSCS and its partners seem to have the structures set up to foster a network of care and generosity, this holiday season.
