Washington D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department is currently piecing together the sequence of events that led to a fatal shooting in the city's Southeast quadrant, as they seek the public's help to solve the case. According to a release from the Metropolitan Police Department, officers from the Seventh District were dispatched to the 1200 block of Valley Avenue, Southeast, at around 5:34 p.m. last Wednesday after reports of gunfire reached them.
The scene they encountered bore the grim hallmarks of urban violence—a young man's life extinguished on the asphalt, with law enforcement stepping in too late to alter the course; upon their arrival, the officers found Tyrone Kearney, a 31-year-old man from Southeast D.C., unconscious and unresponsive with gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of DC Fire and EMS, who rushed to the scene, there were no signs consistent with life, and the victim was pronounced dead.
In their ongoing investigation, the MPD has publicly identified the victim in hopes that those who knew him might step forward with information. With hope fading as swiftly as the setting sun on that November evening, the department appeals to the public, offering a bounty as part of the struggle to break a cycle too familiar in urban landscapes. The MPD is offering up to $25,000 for details that lead to the arrest and indictment of the perpetrator or perpetrators.
The Metropolitan Police Department encourages anyone who might hold a piece of this puzzle to reach out; instructions are clear: take no action but call the police at (202) 727-9099, or anonymously text a tip to 50411.
