Every year, communities and law enforcement agencies come together to remember those who lost their lives in the line of duty. On this day, the Milwaukee Police Department pays tribute to Police Officer Thomas Kiefer, who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving his city on November 25, 1977. In a post on social media, the department solemnly declared, "The Milwaukee Police Department never forgets those members who paid the ultimate price in service to the community."
Officer Kiefer, alongside his partner, was destined to never actually get to knock on that door near 1st and Chambers. As they were preparing to address a family trouble, an unforeseen tragedy was about to unfold. The suspect, positioned behind the partially opened doorway, fired and struck Kiefer in the chest, an event that would tragically mark the end of his watch. Despite the efforts to save him, he succumbed to his wound after being rushed to County General Hospital.
The remembrance shared on the official Milwaukee Police Department's page highlights Officer Kiefer's service of four years to the Milwaukee community. At the time of his death, he was 27 years old and married, leaving behind loved ones and a city grateful for his service yet mournful of his premature departure.
The legacy of those lost in the line of duty lives on through such memorials, serving to remind us that the peace and safety of our neighborhoods are often laid upon the shoulders of those willing to risk it all. Today, and every day, Milwaukee remembers to tirelessly honor the memory of Officer Thomas Kiefer, who, forty-eight years ago, gave everything he could offer to the people he swore to protect.
