Early this morning, Jacksonville residents were met with a moment of collective relief as the Sheriff’s Office announced the safe recovery of 79-year-old Elisha McCray. In a brief but reassuring social media update, authorities thanked the community for their aid in spreading the urgent appeal for information. The post from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office read: "5:50 a.m. Update: We have located Mr. McCray safely, and he is on his way back to his family. Thank you to everyone who helped us spread the word." The gratitude, evident in their words, echoed the sighs of a community concerned for one of their own.
Mr. McCray, reported missing after he did not return home, had sparked an immediate search. His family had shared troubling details of his signs of dementia with law enforcement, intensifying the weight of his absence. Every hour he remained unaccounted for seemed to stretch hope thinner, urging the Sheriff's Office to call upon the public to let quickly spread the news. Mr. McCray, recognizable by his stature of 6’1” and weighing 160 pounds, with grey eyes and a bald head, was last seen in his light brown jacket, Vietnam skull hat, and blue jeans, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
He had set out in his 2009 burgundy Mazda 6, a sedan with a specialty Florida license plate bearing the tag number PNN6X. This information was crucial in efforts to locate Mr. McCray and may have contributed to his safe return. Law enforcement and his family urged anyone with information to call 904-630-0500 immediately.
