A multi-vehicle crash on the eastbound M-59 forced a significant road closure in Oakland County yesterday. ClickOnDetroit reported the incident at MLK just before 6:30 a.m., with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) confirming the shutdown. The closure affected early morning commuters as at least six cars were visibly damaged, with several having spun off the roadway.

As the authorities were investigating the accident, details of the injuries were initially unclear. Several police cars attended the scene, working through the wreckage to ascertain the cause and attend to any potential harmed parties. Meanwhile, MDOT redirected traffic, allowing drivers to re-enter eastbound M-59 from Opdyke Road, easing congestion caused due to the incident.

By midmorning, the roadway was cleared and reopened. According to a report by FOX 2 Detroit, all lanes were made accessible around 10 a.m., following extensive cleanup and safety checks, ensuring the artery was safe for travel. This reopening brought relief to the traffic flow heavily impacted by the earlier crash.

Tragically, amidst the twisted metal and disrupted morning routines, a man's life was claimed. As per a release obtained by MLive, a 34-year-old Pontiac man died in what was ultimately determined to be a seven-vehicle pileup. It is reported that he and a 20-year-old Waterford man driving their respective vehicles struck a patch of ice before losing control and careening into the cable barrier, resulting in subsequent collisions. "Both vehicles hit a patch of ice, ran off the left side of the road and hit the cable barrier," the Oakland County Sheriff's Office disclosed.

Four additional vehicles were damaged in the resulting pileup, which occurred just before 6 a.m. near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Pronounced dead at the scene, the 34-year-old's Chevrolet Aveo was struck by an 18-year-old Oxford man's Ford F150 after the initial collision with the cable barrier, causing fatal injuries. In this cascade of ice-induced chaos, alcohol was not found to be a factor, but excessive speeds in icy conditions were, indicated the sheriff's office. In the collision that fatally injured the Aveo driver, one other driver was treated for minor injuries.
