In the face of community resistance, Elk Grove's landscape is slated for a change as Maverik gains approval for a new 24/7 gas station. Despite an appeal from local residents, and hours of public commentary at a city council meeting, the project will proceed to transform an empty lot into a bustling fueling center near Grant Line Road and East Stockton Boulevard, as reported by KCRA.
September saw the Elk Grove Planning Commission approve the addition of this facility which will include 25 fuel pumps and a convenience store, situated approximately a mile east of the Sky River Casino. The decision was met with dissenting voices expressing concerns over increased traffic, environmental repercussions, and potential crime increases, according to ABC10. Project Elk Grove, a community group, has strongly opposed the project, citing potential negative impacts on air and water quality.
Residents rallied against the project under the banner "Protect Elk Grove," led by attorney Ed Yates, bringing to light concerns about Cortese sites - areas with heavy pollution from leaking underground storage tanks near the project's location. "One of the big issues is there are a lot of leaking underground storage tanks in what are called 'Cortese sites.' These are polluted, very heavily polluted sites all around this project area," stated Yates in an interview obtained by KCRA. Despite these concerns, the gas station avoided a thorough Environmental Quality Act review by adhering to the guidelines set for "infill development."
Yet, advocates for the Maverik project argue that worries of increased diesel truck traffic, emissions, and community safety are without substantial evidence. The site is not intended to be a truck stop, and representatives have assured that overnight parking will not be permitted, a statement obtained by ABC10 clarifies. Notably, there is an existing 24-hour Arco fuel station at the intersection—suggesting to some residents the new Maverik station is an unnecessary duplication of services.
Following a prolonged public hearing, the council nonetheless unanimously passed the project. The community will observe as the development unfolds. However, the timeline for construction commencement remains undisclosed.
