Abraham Veliz, 31, of New Braunfels, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting a peace officer and obstruction or retaliation. The sentence stems from a 2024 incident in which Veliz was involved in a violent confrontation with police responding to a call, according to Fox San Antonio.
The incident occurred on August 13, 2023, on the 200 block of Seville Drive in New Braunfels. According to the Comal County District Attorney's Office and cited by Fox San Antonio, Veliz confronted officers who were responding to a call, claiming he had come to "back up" a friend involved in an ongoing investigation. Police reported that Veliz appeared intoxicated, with bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol, and repeatedly refused to provide identification or leave the scene, escalating the situation and prompting his arrest for interference with public duties and public intoxication.
During the arrest, Veliz headbutted an officer in the nose while being placed into a patrol car, as per Yahoo News. He continued to threaten the officer, claiming he would have caused further harm if not restrained by handcuffs, and reportedly laughed while issuing additional threats about targeting the officer after his release.
Court records show that this was not Veliz’s first encounter with law enforcement, with prior convictions for resisting arrest and assault involving a family member in Comal County. This history, combined with the severity of the 2023 incident, contributed to his 10-year prison sentence. The Comal County District Attorney’s Office noted that Veliz continued threatening the officer during the arrest, stating he would have caused more harm if not restrained, and made additional comments about targeting the officer after his release.
