On August 31, a devastating DUI collision shook the Newark community when a sedan, driven by 31-year-old Raul Quintana at speeds reportedly over 100 mph, collided with an SUV, subsequently crashing into a local residence. The Newark Police Department, in an update posted on social media, confirmed the serious nature of the incident; three SUV passengers and a homeowner were left severely injured and are still in recovery following hospitalization.
Investigations by the Traffic Unit revealed Quintana had a blood alcohol concentration nearly three times the legal limit. The fallout was severe injuries all around, and the driver himself was hospitalized, thus delaying his immediate arrest. After an extensive review, last Thursday, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Quintana with four counts of felony DUI causing injury and issued an arrest warrant. The Newark Police Department successfully apprehended Quintana on Wednesday, "without incident," according to the department.
In their press release, the Newark Police Department acknowledged the efforts of citizens who stepped up in the aftermath of the crash; their assistance and vital information were pivotal. Police Chief Jonathan Arguello was quoted, highlighting the essence of the tragedy: “This serious collision was completely preventable," he emphasized the ripple effect of such reckless decisions, "One person’s decision to drive under the influence nearly cost multiple lives." He also underlined the commitment of the Newark Police in curbing DUI incidents, urging public cooperation and advocating for responsible driving habits.
