The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles is introducing new highway work zone driver training courses. Established under Session Law 2024-30, the courses aim to improve teen and adult drivers’ skills for safely navigating construction areas on highways.

Meeting the December 1 deadline, the NCDMV courses will be included in driver education programs for under-18 students across North Carolina. As stated in an NCDOT press release, “The law requires the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (DPI) to add the training course to the under-18 driver education curriculum at both public-school programs and private driver education schools” The courses provide safety lessons relevant for both new and experienced drivers.

A virtual version of the course is now available at WorkZoneSafe.com, allowing teens and adults to learn work zone driving skills from home. The NCDMV offers this online option to provide greater accessibility for those unable to attend in-person classes or who prefer a digital learning environment.

For those preferring in-person instruction, the NCDMV offers an eight-hour defensive driving course that includes the work zone training. The in-person course costs $83.50. Individuals interested in registering or seeking more information can contact the division at [email protected].
