Residents across North Georgia are preparing for the season’s first major freeze, which is expected to bring a sharp drop in temperatures. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, rain will arrive this weekend before temperatures fall nearly 40 degrees early next week. Authorities advise residents to protect plants, wrap pipes, ensure pets have shelter, and check heating systems before the cold weather sets in.
After a warm period, Atlanta is forecast to experience a wintry mix, with temperatures plunging into the mid-20s to low 30s by Tuesday morning, Patch reported. AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok noted that the conditions will feel more like mid-December, warning drivers to watch for icy patches on bridges and overpasses following the weekend rain.
Showers and storms are expected to begin Friday night in North Georgia. Residents are encouraged to disconnect hoses, water plants in advance to protect roots, and provide outdoor animals with shelter and unfrozen water.
Patch also reported that severe thunderstorms could develop on Sunday as cold and warm air masses collide, bringing additional rain into Monday and leading into the freeze. Residents are urged to prepare for the temperature drop and use caution during the early stages of the cold snap.
