Oahu motorists, brace yourselves for travel disruptions next week as the Hawai'i Department of Transportation takes on roadwork that's bound to affect your evening drive. In an update that may test your route-planning skills, the HDOT has announced it will shut down three westbound lanes on the H-1 Freeway near the Makakilo Drive off-ramp on Monday, Nov. 24, the lane closures taking effect from 8 p.m. to an early 4 a.m. closure the day after, HDOT warns.
Expect these interruptions to be part of your night shift or late-night errands as crews get busy with the preliminary groundwork for an impending pavement refurbishment; initially, the three left lanes will close until midnight, thereafter the baton gets passed to the right lanes which includes the left lane of the Makakilo off-ramp, so you might want to add some buffer to your ETA and stay alert passing through the construction zone.
On Tuesday, lane closures will move to the Kunia/Ewa Beach off-ramps. Three left lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. until midnight, after which crews will work on the right lanes until 4 a.m. The ramps will remain open throughout the construction.
HDOT has deployed special duty police officers for traffic control and safety during lane closures. Electronic message boards will provide updates on the closures, and drivers are advised to plan alternate routes if needed.
