Attention all trail enthusiasts and off-roading aficionados: the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has announced the annual winter shutdown of certain recreation areas. The ODNR Division of Forestry confirmed that horseback riding trails and all-purpose vehicle (APV) areas will see temporary closures starting early December. The bridle trails are set to close on December 1, while APV areas at Pike, Richland Furnace, and Perry state forests will follow suit on December 8, according to a statement from ODNR.
ODNR Division of Forestry Chief Dan Balser says the measure is to ensure the long-term health of these trails. "Both of these types of trails are loved by many and see a great deal of activity each year," Balser told the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website. He adds, "Closing them seasonally allows us to protect the land and maintain the trails for years to come." Notably, the APV areas will remain open later into the season during the regular deer gun season to accommodate hunters with disabilities.
This isn't a spur-of-the-moment decision. Seasonal closures are part of the state forest work plans that have been discussed with the public. It's also an opportunity for forest staff and volunteer groups with approved agreements to perform maintenance on these trails without putting themselves or the public at risk. For those worried about signage, fear not; signs will be posted in parking areas and at trailheads informing visitors about the closures.
For those keeping track, the bridle trails will once again welcome riders on March 30, 2026, and APV enthusiasts can rev their engines starting April 3, 2026.
